About

The centre of Vancouver’s hippie movement in the 1960s, Kitsilano – AKA Kits – may just be the most popular neighbourhood in the city. And why wouldn’t it be? It’s got what’s been called “the best city beach in the world”. Then there are all the cool festivals and events – not to mention the socially responsible, health-conscious, joy-promoting atmosphere. It’s no wonder the area was the birthplace of Greenpeace and Lululemon. On top of everything else, Kitsilano is super easy to get around. Almost everything is within walking distance and the transit in the area is fantastic. Kitsilano sounding pretty heavenly?… That’s because it is. Geographically, Kitsilano extends from Blenheim to Burrard, and north of W 16th Ave.

Kitsilano Rental Market: Kitsilano houses for rent are as eclectic as the neighbourhood itself. There’s a little bit of everything: rooms for rent, character homes, townhouses, apartment buildings, condos in Kitsilano for rent. The only thing you aren’t going to see are high-rises. Of course, prices tend to be higher by the beach. Since everything is so walkable in Kitsilano, though, you’ll be in a good place no matter where you are. In terms of price point, there’s variety there too with Kitsilano apartments for rent. You can find a few cheap rentals, especially in shared student accommodation. Prices then go across the board to epically high for things like whole character homes close to a ton of amenities.

Apartment Hunting in Kitsilano: When looking for Kitsilano apartments for rent, it’s exciting. The area is highly walkable and full of small businesses, making it fun to see all the cool places that’ll be around you. On top of that, you’ll be able to check out studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, and even three-bedrooms in all kinds of settings. If you want a heritage home, they’re around – and tend to come with backyards. More into condos or apartment buildings? You can find everything from spacious older apartments to high-end luxury buildings with pools, gyms, and fantastic views.

Typical housing type: A mix of older homes, multi-family buildings, and low- and mid-rises.

Life & Style

Life in Kitsilano is pretty great. It’s a picture perfect neighbourhood, but in a way that doesn’t feel at all constructed or put on. Locals work hard, but generally in jobs that let them make their own hours or that aren’t just the 9-5 grind. During the daytime, you’ll see students and artsy types sipping all kinds of caffeine-fuelled drinks at indie cafes and shopping the coolest boutiques. Evenings are a blend of dinner out, pub trivia nights, or just some Netflix and chill. The weekends are when everything really comes alive, though. Locals and non-locals flood to the beaches year-round to enjoy the views and the open space. In summertime, there are all sorts of festivals and events! Still trying to figure out the precise vibe of Kitsilano? It’s whole atmosphere can be summed up by a single big name company from the neighbourhood: Lululemon. Seriously, this place is like if Lululemon was its own city.

Neighbourhood

A lot of Kitsilano is residential. To the northeast, you’ll find a lot in Vanier Park. There, you can check out the Museum of Vancouver, the Gordon Southam Observatory, the Vancouver Maritime Museum, and the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, and more. Even when the beach weather ends, there are parks sprinkled along the north part of the neighbourhood heading west. For cool indie cafes and veggie places, head down to W 4th Ave. West Broadway has more dining spots, as well as a liquor store, pharmacy, grocery store, and branch of the public library. Connaught Park boasts a community centre and a farmers’ market. There are all kinds of interesting boutiques and other stores throughout the area. Just a short hop away are Granville Island and Granville Street to the east and more beaches in neighbouring Point Grey.

Who lives here: Kitsilano has a true blend of people from all walks of life. There are students, seniors, families, professionals, artists. So what do residents of this area share? They’ve all got a love of their neighbourhood and neighbours. Residents tend to be open-minded and they look after one another. This care for one another extends to the small businesses in the area. Many small businesses here flourish because locals go out of their way not to buy from big box stores (there are very few in the area). The lack of judgement leads people here to try new things and look for creative pathways through problems. And they do all this while enjoying fun in the sun, satisfying their love of the outdoors.

Perfect for: Open-minded Vancouverites from all walks of life.

Not-so-perfect for: Negative Nancys.

Fun Fact

Is there a downside to living in Kits? Traffic and parking. Try navigating W 4th Ave, Cornwall or Broadway, especially during the summertime, and you’re in for a lot of sitting in one place. Parking is a chore, especially near the beach in summertime.
