Guide de location

The perfect place to start a new day

About

It’s been labelled “one to watch” for several years, but now Hastings-Sunrise seems to really be coming into its own. That said, prices haven’t gone wild yet. This makes Hastings-Sunrise, located east of Nanaimo Street and north of Broadway, the ideal neighbourhood for young families. They can get in now and then have a place locked down in what will likely soon become the place to be. For now, it’s not especially walkable, and some crime still affects the neighbourhood.

Hastings-Sunrise Rental Market: According to a number of magazines and rental sites, Hastings-Sunrise is poised to be one of “Canada’s next great neighbourhoods”. If you believe that, this is the right time to get into the neighbourhood because prices are still low. It’s already getting hard to find Hastings-Sunrise houses for rent, though, so you may have to do some solid searching before you find the right place. Once you find it, stick around and watch the area continue to build up around you!

Apartment Hunting in Hastings-Sunrise: Apartment hunting in Hastings-Sunrise has a lot to offer. If you’re interested in cheap Hastings-Sunrise apartments for rent, there are a few available. You can also find the odd basement suite or a room in a house. Aside from those choices, you’re probably looking mostly at floors of houses or whole houses, especially if you’re in the market for three-bedrooms and more. Many of these houses have backyards, dishwashers, and in-suite laundry.

Typical housing type: Single-family homes.

Life & Style

Life in Hastings-Sunrise is pretty quiet. Locals work hard during the week and tend to spend evenings with their families. On the weekends, you see those families out and about, enjoying the neighbourhood or heading out for an adventure in the city or the mountains. Aside from family, residents also love building community. They talk to their neighbours and support small businesses. That gives a warm, friendly feel to the area. It’s no wonder people call Hastings-Sunrise less of a neighbourhood and more of its own town.

Neighbourhood

Hastings-Sunrise has a huge amount of green space, most of which is provided by the enormous Hastings Park. In the park are a ton of things to do with little ones, such as CircusWest, and the PNE Forum. There are a good number of transit stops, as well as several main roads including the Trans-Canada Highway. Schools and places of worship are scattered around the neighbourhood. Head to the southeast for car shopping, gas, or some grocery stores. Further north, you can find Leeside Skatepark, Hastings Community Centre, and a few places to eat along East Hastings. The west side is more residential, but you can still find some daycares, pharmacies, banks, and grocery stores. With a quick car trip you can easily pop downtown or into the surrounding suburbs.

Who lives here: Hastings-Sunrise draws three types of people: families, families, and families. Being on the edge of Vancouver, Hastings-Sunrise is priced in a way that’s accessible for young families, including those just moving to the big city. Locals tend to want a work/life balance where their jobs don’t control them. They’d rather work when they have to and dedicate the rest of their time to their loved ones. Health and fitness are big here. That makes it no wonder that parents want to take their kids out for active day trips, sometimes even going up into the mountains for hikes or skiing.

Perfect for: Young families looking to put down roots.

Not-so-perfect for: Singles who love the nightlife.
