Intrigue in the heart of downtown

About

Made up of just over a dozen streets, Upper Jarvis is a long-established neighbourhood in the heart of downtown Toronto. It extends from Bloor Street to Wellesley Street East and from Sherbourne Street to Jarvis Street. Jarvis Street and the Upper Jarvis neighbourhood were named for Canada’s first Secretary and Registrar of Records, William Jarvis. Though its roots are historical, Upper Jarvis has grown into a thriving, modern neighbourhood.

Life & Style

Life in Upper Jarvis is largely shaped by the fact that it is a downtown neighbourhood dominated by singles. During the week, locals are often focused on work. When the weekend comes around, residents can be found hosting house parties or grabbing a drink with friends at one of the area’s popular watering holes. Brunch out is also a weekend tradition, allowing residents to bond while reliving the most exciting moments from the night before.

Neighbourhood

A small neighbourhood, the majority of Upper Jarvis’ space is taken up by homes and apartment buildings. In the southern portion is the Keg Mansion, as well as a small park, a Rabba, and a Reiki centre. Head north to find a plaza with a McDonald’s, Booster Juice, No Frills, Canada Post, and the Consulate General of India. Kiss 92.5’s offices are also in the community, as is magazine publisher, Canadian Health & Lifestyle. Upper Jarvis plays host to several hotels and Monsignor Fraser College. Just outside the neighbourhood are Yonge Street and Church Street, which is home to Toronto’s thriving LGBTQ community. Maple Leaf Gardens Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, and several subway stations are within walking distance of Upper Jarvis. For affordable shopping, check out Yonge Street, or meander up to Bloor for higher-end options. While there’s little green space in Upper Jarvis, Allan Gardens, which houses a picturesque botanical garden situated in a turn-of-the-century conservatory, is just steps away. As an added perk, Allan Gardens is tropically warm year-round!
