Charming rowhouses in downtown that are still affordable (for now)

About

Corktown is a historic residential neighbourhood in downtown Toronto with its streets lined with charming older rowhouses. Through restoration and renovation, the community is being transformed into a more desirable place to live, visit or just hang out.

The Corktown neighbourhood is north of the Gardiner Expressway, south of Regent Park, west of Don River east of Parliament Street.

Old industrial buildings now contain studios and shops, and a few are used for movie production. Some of these older buildings also house offices, lofts and condos. The neighbourhood has seen a lot of newer condos coming in and still more under construction offering some of the more affordable units close to downtown.

The neighbourhood is one of the more affordable for downtown Toronto and is popular for young professionals not only for more affordable rents, but also because of its proximity to the downtown and entertainment districts.

Neighbourhood landmarks include the Underpass Park, Corktown Common, the historic Little Trinity Church and the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse.

Underpass Park, 2.5 acres beneath the Eastern Avenue, Richmond and Adelaide overpasses, offers recreational space for children and adults, public art and community spaces. It is the first park to be designed and built under an overpass in Toronto.

Typical housing type:

Row Houses, townhouses, and duplexes

Corktown Rental Market: Corktown apartments for rent are still relatively inexpensive, especially while the commercial aspect of the community catches up with the renovation of the residential portion. There are places available for renters in almost any price range, including more expensive detached homes and trendy lofts, or the cheaper side which includes basement suites and small row houses. Renters should take note that there are fewer three-bedroom units for rent available on the market in Corktown, but lots of two-bedroom places.

Life & Style

Corktown as a place to live tends to be on the quiet side. But residents are super close to the Distillery District and the St. Lawrence neighbourhood with the famous St. Lawrence Market, which was voted one of the best in the world a few years back. Pet owners can take the dog out for a run at Orphan's Green dog park, and families head to Sackville Park, right in the middle of the neighbourhood. Because of the lack of commercial (most of it is around Queen East), the streets of Corktown aren't busy, with residents heading to greener pastures for their entertainment needs.

Neighbourhood

Corktown’s eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and shops are mostly on Queen East, closer to Parliament, and King Street. Check out the Dominion Pub and Kitchen, an unpretentious spot pulling 24 taps of craft beer with live music Thursday and Saturday; Reyna on King, a stylish spot offering coffee and Mediterranean fare and evening cocktails (You have to try the lamb baklava which is also on its Yorkville menu); Gusto 501, a multilevel Italian restaurant and cocktail bar (the menu is similar to Gusto 101); and Spacio, excellent for Italian food, pasta, bread, pastries and wine.
