Renting Guide

Life’s a beach

About

Point Grey has awesome beaches, but it’s more famous for being one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in the city. People think of Point Grey as the bastion of Vancouver rich and famous. But the neighbourhood isn’t all mansions and private clubs. There are parts that are more modest and still give you access to the beaches. So even if your budget isn’t unlimited, take a look at Point Grey, which occupies the West Side of Vancouver, between Kitsilano and UBC. You might just find yourself digging your toes into the sand while watching the sunset sometime soon…

Point Grey Rental Market: Most of the Point Grey hoyses for rent are as old as the neighbourhood itself. There are some more modest options, but there are plenty of mansions too. If you’re renting, odds are pretty good that you’re never going to get close to the most expensive homes in the area. Instead, you’re likely to end up in one of the area’s newer condos or apartments or renting part of a house from one of the neighbourhood’s long-time residents. That means you’re looking at more modest digs – and price tags.

Apartment Hunting in Point Grey: Looking for Point Grey apartments for rent can feel intimidating. How can you possibly afford anything here? But you can. We’re not saying there are cheap rentals here, but there are reasonable ones. Here’s the breakdown: for studios and one-bedrooms with amenities, check out the condos and apartment buildings. You’ll pay more if you want things like a pool, gym, or 24-hour concierge. For two-bedroom and three-bedroom units, look at renting a house. There, you’re likely to find a dishwasher and on-site laundry. For a true luxury rental, try to get into one of the area’s mansions. You might even land yourself tennis courts and a bowling alley!

Typical housing type: A blend of older homes, multi-family places, and a handful of condo and apartment buildings.

Life & Style

Life in Point Grey is different depending on the number of dollar bills you’ve got in the bank. Got less? It’s a nice family neighbourhood to live a quiet life in. The streets are perfect for strolls and you can easily pop over to the beach for a day out with the kids. When you’ve got cold hard cash though, the neighbourhood’s grander aspects open right up. We’re talking yachts, private clubs, exclusive parties… the whole nine yards. Residents who can take advantage of these elements love eating out and splurging on shopping trips. On the weekends, they often head to the club for a beach or spa day or head out sailing.

Neighbourhood

Of course, Point Grey’s highlight is its beaches. There’s also the large Jericho Beach Park and Jericho Hill Grounds, as well as several close-by golf courses. By the water, there are a number of private clubs, as well as the West Point Grey Community Centre and Old Hastings Mill Store Museum. There are several public and private schools in the area. Farther east, you can find a smattering of pubs, cafes, and grocery stores. On the west side, W 10th Ave has some stores and places to grab food. Aside from that, the neighbourhood is pretty residential with locals heading elsewhere for nights out and adventures in the city.

Who lives here: Point Grey has a lot of long-time residents. That’s because, once people are in the neighbourhood, they never want to leave. Most of the blue rinse crowd in Point Grey tend to have less money as they bought their homes ages ago, when real estate in the area was super affordable. These residents raised their families in the area and are now enjoying being empty nesters. Newer locals are completely different, though. They’re pretty darn wealthy – and are happy to use that wealth to get the exclusive life they want. Most are couples or have older children. Like themselves, they want their kids to have access to the finer things and will shell out what they need to to make that happen.

Perfect for: Families and seniors with lots of cash.

Not-so-perfect for: Young singles and people with more modest incomes.

Fun Fact

Point Grey made headlines recently for its outrageously priced real estate. Here, small lots with uninhabitable tear-down homes were listed for around $4 million.
