Suburbs and suburbs and suburbs, oh my!
Nepean, a neighbourhood encompassing many smaller neighbourhoods in Ottawa’s west end, was established in 1792 and originally included what is now the central area of Ottawa west of the Rideau River. Fun fact: a Nepean quarry provided the sandstone blocks that were the main material used to build the Parliament Buildings in downtown Ottawa.
Renters have a wide selection of possible housing choices, ranging from rooms for rent in private homes, to 3 bedroom townhouses, to brand-new condos with bachelor, 1 or 2 bedroom apartments for rent. Apartment hunting in Nepean is fun, because you can find almost any type of rental here. Looking for an apartment to rent with amenities? Life & Style
There are many beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy in Nepean. Hogs Back Falls at Mooney’s Bay is where the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal split. The Falls are part of the original rapids on the river and Hogs Back Falls Park features many walking and cycling paths. Then there’s Britannia Beach, located just off Carling Avenue on the Ottawa River at Britannia Bay. This beach is great for swimming, picnics, and barbecues, and has play structures for young children. You’ll see many families who don’t have their own backyard enjoying all Britannia has to offer. Just up the road is Dick Bell Park and the Nepean Sailing Club, a marina home to watercraft of all sizes.
Looking to get your fashion fix? Nepean has several malls, including the 200 stores at Bayshore Shopping Centre (Sephora, H&M, Aritzia, Forever 21), the College Square big box stores beside Algonquin College (Aldo, Tommy Hilfiger, Dynamite, Guess), and Merivale Mall.
Nepean spans far and wide to include such popular neighbourhoods as Barrhaven, Craig Henry, Centrepointe, Bells Corners, Crystal Beach, Britannia, and Bayshore, and boasts institutions such as Algonquin College, the Queensway Carleton Hospital, Ben Franklin Place, Centrepointe Theatre, and the Walter Baker Sports Centre. OC Transpo buses run throughout these areas.
Barrhaven is a suburb populated mostly by young families and young retirees in newer single family homes and townhomes, while Bells Corners is mostly made up of bungalows built in the 1950’s. However, there are also many affordable townhomes to rent in Bells Corners off Richmond Road and Moodie Drive, near schools and parks.
The Bayshore area surrounding Bayshore Shopping Centre has been revitalized in the past 5 years by property management company Minto. It is now known as Accora Village, a grouping of high-rise apartments, townhomes and garden homes in a community featuring an elementary school, parks, playgrounds, an outdoor rink and a community centre with an indoor pool.
Professionals tend to gravitate towards the area near the Queensway Carleton Hospital, in either a high-rise 1 or 2 bedroom apartment off Baseline Road or on Pinecrest Road. A few buildings are now under construction that will offer luxury apartment rentals with onsite amenities including fitness rooms, pools, restaurants and rooftop lounges in boutique-hotel inspired towers.
