Great place to raise a family
Kanata is one of the largest suburbs in Ottawa, located west of the downtown core. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in Canada, and is widely regarded as an affluent neighbourhood, filled with young families, high-tech professionals and retirees. This planned community boasts lots of green space and parks within its smaller communities of Bridlewood, Katimavik, Hazeldean, Beaverbrook, Glen Cairn, Morgan's Grant, and Kanata Lakes.
Single family homes and townhomes abound. Kanata is largely the design of Bill Teron, a developer and urban planner who began building this model community in the 1960’s. The community grew quickly due to the influx of high tech workers, especially in the 80’s and 90’s. Ottawa, and the Kanata area in particular, became one of Canada's largest high-tech cities and was nicknamed Silicon Valley North. Currently there are hundreds of companies such as Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia, Mitel, and March Networks in this sector.
There are many options for renters in Kanata, from 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in brand-new low-rise executive condos for rent, to high-rise rental suites in buildings with amenities such as recreation and fitness rooms, to affordable older townhomes in co-op communities. Housing in Kanata is widely available, with new rental listings opening up all the time. Check out our website Rentals.ca for updated listings daily!
Life & Style
Whether it’s early morning, midday, or early evening, you are likely to see joggers, walkers, and cyclists of all ages enjoying the many sidewalks, trails, and paths throughout Kanata. Children benefit from the more than 40 parks across Kanata, with playground equipment, sandboxes, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and skateboarding parks.
There are plenty of schools in the neighbourhoods (both public and private), churches from every faith, and shopping hubs such as Centrum, which features a 24-theatre Cineplex and over a dozen restaurants, and the 80-plus stores of Tanger Outlets a bit further west. Kanata is also the location of Canadian Tire Centre (CTC), home of the Ottawa Senators NHL hockey team and Ottawa’s largest concert venue.
There are five large recreation centres in Kanata, including the Kanata Recreation Complex, Richcraft, and the Kanata Leisure Centre & Wave Pool, offering swimming lessons, hockey leagues, martial arts, dance instruction, gymnastics, arts programs, day camps, and drop-in programs for toddlers, kids and teenagers. Adult rec programs and courses are also offered at these locations. Outdoor skating rinks and tobogganing hills are also very popular with Kanata residents of all ages.
No matter which side of Kanata you live on (North or South) you will have fast access to major roadways and Highway 417 (The Queensway.) Many residents of Kanata work in the area, but there is also a significant amount of people who commute to downtown Ottawa. There are three OC Transpo Park and Ride locations, on Terry Fox, Eagleson, and Fallowfield, so busing around the city is easy. The buses also run throughout many of the suburban streets, carrying commuters and students to work and school.
