Great rec centres with sports and activities for all ages
Gloucester is a large neighbourhood (and former city) in Ottawa's east end which encompasses some industrial areas and several smaller neighbourhoods, including Beacon Hill, Blackburn Hamlet, Blossom Park, Riverside South and many others.
Beacon Hill is divided into North and South, split by Montreal Road, and is a quiet, family-friendly neighbourhood, close to schools, shopping, restaurants, and professional services.
Some of the high-rises in this area have panoramic views of the Gatineau Hills. There are also 1 and 2 bedroom apartments for rent in low-rise buildings. Whether you’re searching for an apartment rental, condo rental, or a house rental, Gloucester is a large neighbourhood filled with a variety of different living styles, so you’re bound to find a perfect rental fit.
Life & Style
Gloucester boasts some top-notch recreation opportunities and facilities, including the Pat Clark Community Centre, which offers city-run classes for all ages in dance, music, fitness, and more. And a volunteer-led group, the Gloucester Recreation Development Organization, offers affordable (almost free) recreation and leadership programs for children and youth who may have otherwise not become active in sports due to financial, cultural, or social barriers.
Blackburn Hamlet is one of only two Ottawa communities fully surrounded by Ottawa’s Greenbelt, which provides residents with over 250 kilometres of hiking and cross country skiing trails. The Greenbelt includes farms, forests and wetlands. It was created in the 1950's to protect the rural land bordering the National Capital from urban sprawl. This established community, which also has some newer builds, is quite close to downtown Ottawa, yet still has a village feel. The tree-lined streets and parks form a network connecting the whole neighbourhood for walkers and cyclists.
Blossom Park is bordered to its north by Hunt Club Road, to the west the Airport Parkway, Conroy Road to the east, and the NCC Greenbelt to the south. The South Keys plaza, just up Bank Street from Hunt Club, features a large number of big box stores, restaurants, and a movie theatre. The South Keys Transitway Station allows travel by bus to almost anywhere in Ottawa.
Riverside South is a suburban community in the south end of Gloucester, just southwest of the Ottawa airport. Since 1996, when the first homes were built, the area has been developing rapidly. Most of the development has centred on the areas around River Road and Earl Armstrong Road, and just west of Limebank Road. This neighbourhood has mostly single-family homes, but there are some basement apartments in homes, and some condos available for rent.
The Gloucester Centre shopping mall, a main retail hub, is located in the south end of Beacon Hill near Blair Road and Ogilvie Road.
The Blair Transitway station for OC Transpo buses is located near the Gloucester Centre, making it easy to get anywhere in Ottawa. A large cinema is also close by the centre for evenings out. The Scotiabank Theatre (formerly SilverCity Gloucester) has 16 screens playing a mix of the latest movies and old favourites.
