There are two major roads that run on each side of the lake. Queen Elizabeth Driveway, which runs beside the north and west sides of the lake, and Colonel By Drive, named after the founder of Ottawa, runs beside the south side of the lake.
The north-end pavilion is open year-round and offers canoe and paddle boat rentals, as well as an indoor changing area for skating on the Canal, the world's longest skating rink and a site of the annual Winterlude festival in February.
This neighbourhood is best known for the annual Canadian Tulip Festival, which takes place each May in the park surrounding Dow’s Lake, Commissioners Park. People come from all over the globe to view the more than 300,000 tulips in bloom along the Rideau Canal. The paths along the Canal are also scenic routes for walkers and cyclists.
