Life & Style
The Carlingwood mall has 120 stores and services and its large rectangular layout is popular with walkers who want to get exercise indoors, especially seniors. Many OC Transpo bus routes service the shopping centre, so it's easy to get around Ottawa from this neighbourhood. Some major tenants of the mall include a Loblaws grocery store, Rexall Pharma Plus, and three banks. There are also two underground sections which include a Dollarama, The Bargain Shop, and the Carlingwood branch of the Y (YMCA/YWCA) Centre.
The 20,000 sq ft Carlingwood Y is an important part of the community and offers: health, fitness and recreation programs, including strength training, aerobic conditioning, swimming, and water fitness; group exercise classes; child care; camping and outdoor education; and a range of social services. Carlingwood is also known for its many churches of different faiths.
The two small neighbourhoods bordering Carlingwood and often considered part of Carlingwood West-- McKellar Heights (also called McKellar Park) and Glabar Park-- add some useful amenities to the area.
McKellar Heights is considered a trendy area, with its proximity to Westboro. It is home to the Jewish Community Campus of Ottawa. The campus features the Soloway Jewish Community Centre (where everyone is welcome), Hillel Lodge (a nursing home), and Hillel Academy School. McKellar Park is a welcoming space that houses the McKellar Park Community Building, picnic tables and benches, a basketball court, tennis courts, a wading pool, a ball field, and soccer fields.
Glabar Park is in the area between Fairlawn Avenue and Maitland Avenue. Most houses in the neighbourhood were built from the 1940's to the 1960's, and some townhouses were built off Fairlawn Avenue in the mid-eighties. Fairlawn Mall is on Carling Avenue across from Carlingwood Shopping Centre and includes a Staples, Harvey's, Swiss Chalet, Shoppers Drug Mart, LCBO, and Bridgehead Coffee.
