The Carleton Heights Community Centre, at 1665 Apeldoorn Avenue, offers a wide selection of recreational activities and programs for all ages, including morning preschool, play groups, camps, fitness, sports, and arts. The Terry Fox Athletic Facility located in Mooney's Bay Park is popular for athletic training and sports including soccer, rugby, lacrosse, Ultimate, and a cross-country ski centre and school.
Outdoor recreation opportunities abound throughout the area. The Rideau Canoe Club, on Hog's Back Road, is one of the top canoe clubs in Canada and offers paddling classes, summer camps, and Dragon Boat Race training on the Rideau River, open to paddlers of all skill levels. Hockey enthusiasts can take advantage of the outdoor hockey rink every winter maintained by the volunteers of the Carleton Heights Area Residents Association.
Most of the Carleton Heights 'vet' homes were built from the 1950's to the 1970's. This close-knit community is filled with green space and mature trees. There are plenty of parks and pathways, and most schools are within walking distance.
The Rideauview area houses a low-income development designed and built by the Ottawa Housing Corporation. The Prince of Wales community has high rises with scenic river views, while Prince of Wales on the Rideau is an affluent sub-neighbourhood made up of estate-type homes.
Hog’s Back Park is a popular destination, attracting visitors with its natural beauty and spectacular views of Hog’s Back Falls and the Rideau River. Hogs Back Falls at Mooney’s Bay is where the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal split to flow on to downtown Ottawa. The Falls are part of the original rapids on the river, and many cycling and walking paths wind along beside the river. In the winter, cross-country skiers frequent the park.
Mooney's Bay has beachfront and a swimming area on the east shore of the Rideau River just south of Carleton University. The beach is also a top choice for volleyball players.
Carleton University and Algonquin College are both just five kilometres away, and there are bike paths leading to downtown. As for shopping, Merivale Road, with its midsize mall and many small plazas and places to eat, is the main hub.
