A cute little beachside neighbourhood
Britannia (also known as Britannia Bay, Britannia Village, and Britannia Woods) is a group of small neighbourhoods in the west end of Ottawa, adjacent to Britannia Bay on the Ottawa River. This area was cottage country until after the second World War. When veterans returned from the war, many moved into Britannia due to its affordability.
Today, Britannia has a mix of low and high income housing. The more affluent areas are at the north end of Britannia Road, towards the river and the Britannia Yacht Club, while the lower income areas are closer to Carling Avenue.
In addition to the Ottawa Community Housing available in Britannia, there are also apartments for rent in both low-rises and high-rises, and the rents tend to be lower than many other areas in Ottawa. Several of the downtown high-rise apartments for rent have stunning views of the Ottawa River and Gatineau Hills. Townhomes, semi-detached homes, and "cottage-style" bungalows close to the river are also available to rent, and the rents for these are quite high. Moving to Britannia? Life & Style
The Britannia Woods Community House on Ritchie Street offers programs and services that aim to improve the quality of life for multicultural families and households living on a fixed or low income. Community engagement has been identified as a key factor in attempts to lower incidences of crime in the area.
Residents in this neighbourhood enjoy walking-distance access to beautiful Brittania Park and Beach, with its many pathways for walking and biking. This park is popular for swimming, picnics, and barbecues. There are also a few play structures for children.
Not far from the park, on Britannia Road, you'll find two retail gems in the midst of this residential area: Kite Life and The Beachconers. The Kite Life shop offers everything you need to participate in the extreme sport of kiteboarding, a surface water sport combining aspects of wakeboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and skateboarding. On the Ottawa River you will often see brightly-coloured curved "kites" in the air while kitesurfers ride the waves.
The Beachconers is a little cafe that serves up homemade ice cream and other sweet treats, which you can enjoy on the patio on a nice day.
Cyclists will appreciate The Ottawa River Pathway, which runs from Britannia to the Parliament buildings downtown. Commuters also have easy access to the Sir John A MacDonald (Ottawa River) Parkway and Highways 416 and 417. For those taking the bus, major OC Transitway stations at Bayshore and Lincoln Fields can get you to both the west end and downtown fairly quickly. And the new DND Carling Campus is less than a 10 minute drive away from Britannia.
