Super popular with soccer moms
Barrhaven is a large suburb in the southwest part of Ottawa, and it’s a rapidly growing neighbourhood. It is bounded to the north by the Greenbelt, to the east by the Rideau River, to the west by Highway 416, and to the south along Cambrian Road south of the Jock River. Development began in earnest in the 1960’s, but Barrhaven had very few stores or restaurants until 1991 when the Barrhaven Town Centre complex was built.
Barrhaven is made up of many smaller neighbourhoods including Strandherd Meadows, Longfields, Havenlea, Chapman Mills, Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay, and Pheasant Run. These areas are generally named by the developers and include condos, townhouses, and single-family homes.
Renters can choose to call one of these newer dwellings home, as many of them are purchased with the intent of renting them out. These houses and townhouses are popular with young families and professional couples on their rental search. The 1 and 2 bedroom apartments available for rent tend to be in condo buildings. Rentals.ca has multiple condos, houses, and apartments for rent in Barrhaven, and it’s super easy to use our website for your rental search! Just search up the location you’re looking for rentals in and you can use our map filter to find the write rental listing for you.
Life & Style
When it comes to recreation, Barrhaven has all the bases covered, thanks in large part to the Walter Baker Sports Centre and the Minto Recreation Complex. Both facilities offer a wide selection of programs for residents of all ages, from swimming to skating to art.
As for employment, in addition to retail and the professional offices throughout the area, there are also some hi-tech companies and Public Service offices. A major employment district was established in 2015 in the area west of Strandherd Drive, adjacent to Highway 416, known as the CitiGate corporate campus.
Barrhaven is a favourite of families due to the dozens of public, private, and Catholic schools in the area, as well as more than 20 parks and playgrounds. There is also a beautiful trail from Beryl Gaffney Park in Manotick to Stonebridge Park in Barrhaven that is about a 7 km round trip. It is next to the Jock River, winding through forests and fields and then alongside the Rideau River. You will see many people hiking, cycling, and walking their dogs on this trail.
Lacking a commercial district for decades, Barrhaven now has hundreds of businesses including stores, restaurants, pubs, and professional services of every type. The area surrounding Strandherd Drive and Greenbank Road has a cinema, grocery stores, big box stores, and coffee shops.
Getting around Barrhaven and to the rest of Ottawa is easy, with access to highways, OC Transpo buses, and also Via Rail, at the Fallowfield Station located at the intersection of Fallowfield Road and Woodroffe Avenue.
