A haven for Calgary yuppies to indulge in all things indie
Marda Loop-Altadore – located in the SW quadrant – is one of Calgary’s best neighbourhoods to live in. Close to downtown, containing hip shopping and dining options, and within spitting distance of River Park, it’s no wonder this is an in demand neighbourhood. Like most trendy areas, this one draws yuppies and families. But the wave of gentrification and development has made a dramatic change to the landscape and type of people who live here. So if you’re considering this neighbourhood, stop circling and get into the Loop.

Life & Style
Situated close to downtown, the neighbourhood is a favourite amongst young lawyers, bankers, architects and corporate business people. You know, everyone working crazy hours now in hopes of owning a cottage in 20 to 30 years. Locals basically desert the neighbourhood from 9-to-5 as they work their asses off. In the evening though, residents come flooding back in to network over drinks or nibbles at one of Marda Loop-Altadore’s coolest gastropubs. Weekends not spent at work are reserved for shopping and entertainment or – in the summer – getting trashed at the yearly Marda Gras Festival.
Marda Loop-Altadore has been a go-to neighbourhood for trendy yuppies and families. There’s an even mix of singles and couples, who are all highly educated and with solid incomes. In the meantime, they’re keeping their eyes on the work prize, and saving their evenings and weekends for cocktails in the Loop or on 17th.
Drivers have easy access to the city through Crowchild Trail. There are beautiful natural spaces in the area, including River Park – a Calgary favourite – and the Elbow River. The area’s highlight is the Marda Loop, a famous outdoor shopping centre and party hotspot. There are a few schools in the neighbourhood, including public and private options. The area also plays host to the Yoga & Meditation Community Centre.
Perfect for: Yuppies and young families with a love of all things trendy and new.
Not-so-perfect for: Seniors and anyone who loves that indie status.
