When you need some man-made calm
The wealthy SE neighbourhood of Lake Bonavista’s claim to fame is being Canada’s first community built around a man-made lake. Having emerged in the 1960s as a sophisticated, calm haven in the midst of the city, the neighbourhood is now… seen the exact same way. It has the feel of a perma-vacation. Would-be residents should be willing to pay a hefty price for this though – both for homeowners and renters alike.

Elegant detached homes.
Lake Bonavista is known for its scenic lake – and homes. The houses have a luxury quality, as well as excellent gardens. Let’s face it, the waterside location isn’t bad either. Don’t expect a deal though as the decked out house and neighbourhood amenities don’t come cheap. Renters tend to cluster in the few apartment buildings, with a few house rentals available during certain seasons. It can be tough to find availabilities, especially for those seeking larger apartments for rent. Again, expect to pay a premium for the lakefront location. Lake Bonavista has beautiful views, so if you’re looking for a relaxing, elegant rental, check out this neighbourhood!
Life & Style
Come for the peace and quiet; stay for the… peace and quiet? Seriously, though, that’s what locals here want. They love strolling down to the lake in the afternoon, thinking or – on a nice day – reading a book by the water. When not privately embracing the shared neighbourhood space, locals build their own little havens, gardening or engaging in small DIY projects at home.
Lake Bonavista residents share a certain level of sophistication and class. They are seeking a quiet home base, where they can have a touch of privacy. Most locals are coupled up, and there’s a healthy seniors population.
Of course, Lake Bonavista’s highlight is its man-made lake. In addition, it has a number of small parks sprinkled throughout the neighbourhood. There is also Fish Creek and a surrounding park directly south of the area. In addition to the bus routes running through Lake Bonavista, the CTrain serves the area. Drivers have direct access to Macleod Trail SE. There are a number of schools and churches in the area, as well as a skating rink. The southwest corner of Lake Bonavista has a movie theatre and a shopping centre. Just north of the neighbourhood, on the west side, is a larger mall. Also to the north – this time to the east – is Maple Ridge Golf Course.
Perfect for: Seniors seeking peace and quiet in a beautiful natural setting.
Not-so-perfect for: Families with young children and young professionals who love that downtown vibe.
