Instead, they\u2019re heeding and keeping an eye on guidelines from public health officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning and more precisely keeping apartments and buildings safe have taken on a new meaning since the words coronavirus and COVID-19 became part of our daily language. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rentals.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoke with a few property managers and a cleaning company to see how the new pandemic is changing their cleaning routines and protocols.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1582\" src=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-2-1024x804.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-2-1024x804.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-2-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-2-768x603.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-2-1536x1206.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-2-2048x1608.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleanliness has always been a priority for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenwin Property Management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Weiman, vice-president, quality assurance and compliance, Greenwin Corp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Canada, we were well-positioned to act fast,\u201d he said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One major thing we did was contract a company to apply a bonding antimicrobial treatment to all high-traffic areas and heavily touched surfaces. This treatment is effective for up to six months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company is also cleaning its buildings three times a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weiman acknowledges the use of more products as a result of cleaning more often comes at a cost, \u201cbut it\u2019s worth it to keep our residents safe. We\u2019ll definitely be following the guidance of Canadian and local health authorities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenrock Real Estate Advisors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also implemented specific measures. It\u2019s using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/germguard.ca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GermGuard Treat and Protect Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Registered by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the treatment is said to kill up to 99 per cent of germs on contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenrock researched the top cleaning programs in Canada before deciding to use the GermGuard Treat and Protect Program, says Justin Taylor, COO of Greenrock Real Estate Advisors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securing personal protective equipment and its cleaning product supply chain have been the biggest challenges property managers have faced regarding new cleaning measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven prior to this crisis, we already had standardized protocols to ensure a high level of cleanliness across all of our buildings, so when it came to increasing these measures, the framework was already in place,\u201d Weiman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Safety and cleaning recommendations by public health officials<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1581\" src=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-1-751x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"751\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-1-751x1024.jpg 751w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-1-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-1-768x1047.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/clean-1.jpg 994w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/>Health Canada, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/city-government\/accountability-operations-customer-service\/city-administration\/staff-directory-divisions-and-customer-service\/toronto-public-health\/\">Toronto Pub<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/city-government\/accountability-operations-customer-service\/city-administration\/staff-directory-divisions-and-customer-service\/toronto-public-health\/\">lic Health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cfaa-fcapi.org\/\">The Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations<\/a> have all issued cleaning recommendations for property managers, which include upgrading cleaning schedules, and cleaning high-touch surfaces, such as door knobs, door handles, key pads, mail boxes, handrails and elevator buttons, more frequently, at a minimum of twice a day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Public Health has also advised building operators use only disinfectants that have a drug identification number (DIN). Health Canada provides this number, which confirms the product is approved for use in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenwin is using hospital-grade disinfecting products, such as Oxivir Tb\u00a0Wipes\u00a0and\u00a0Sanicare Quat, which are on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/disinfectants\/covid-19\/list.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada\u2019s list of products.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1566\" src=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lysol-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lysol-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lysol-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lysol-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lysol-2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lysol-2.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other products on the list, which are available in stores, include Lysol Multi-Surface Cleaner, Lysol Disinfectant Spray, Clorox Disinfecting Wipes and Clorox Disinfecting Liquid Bleach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over in Midtown Toronto, in the lobby of a building run by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colonia Treuhand<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a bottle of hand sanitizer sits on a table alongside printouts about COVID-19 from government websites. A notice by the elevator, which has also been distributed to residents, reveals the building is undergoing additional daytime cleaning of frequently touched surfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1568\" src=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Table-at-Colonia-Treuhand-building-2-11.13.07-AM-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Table-at-Colonia-Treuhand-building-2-11.13.07-AM-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Table-at-Colonia-Treuhand-building-2-11.13.07-AM-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Table-at-Colonia-Treuhand-building-2-11.13.07-AM-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Table-at-Colonia-Treuhand-building-2-11.13.07-AM-rotated.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlease be assured that we are and have been closely following the instructions and guidelines issued by national and regional health authorities,\u201d the notice says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhapsody Property Management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also putting in extra effort, by extending the cleaning hours of common areas until 11 p.m., besides cleaning its high-touch surfaces twice a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cleaning companies adopt new COVID-19 measures<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of the actual cleaning, the task may fall to the superintendent or a cleaning company. For these companies, COVID-19 has also resulted in new protocols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michal Lewandowski, CEO of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Maid Easy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told customers that cleaning staff will enter properties wearing fresh masks and gloves, that the interior and handles of its vehicles will be disinfected daily, and that the outside of all cleaning supply and product containers will be disinfected between each property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe recognize the ongoing and increased uncertainty that COVID-19 is causing, and our highest priority is the health and well-being of all of our employees and customers,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1571\" src=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Greenrock-thank-you-to-cleaning-staff-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Greenrock-thank-you-to-cleaning-staff-1-rotated.jpg 480w, https:\/\/rentals.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Greenrock-thank-you-to-cleaning-staff-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenrock has a team of regular cleaning staff for each of its residential and commercial properties, says Taylor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c(They) have been doing an amazing job before and during the pandemic. While we have increased cleaning overall with additional third-party cleaners, our cleaning team continues to take care of the people and families in our buildings,\u201d Taylor says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And buildings\u2019 residents are noticing the extra effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey added a hand sanitizer dispenser by the elevator on the first floor,\u201d says Debbie C., who lives in a Toronto apartment. \u201cI feel like they\u2019re putting in some effort, and that they\u2019re doing the best they can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weiman says Greenwin has also received compliments on its staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c(They) really are the heroes in this situation for showing time and time again how committed they are to making our residents feel safe in their homes,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Property managers aren\u2019t going to risk guessing how and when to clean their apartment buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
